Machine Tool Manufacturing - Observations from the Production Floor

The Modig Machine Tool factory is bustling with life, and the feeling on the factory floor is almost electric. From the pre-assembly via the warehouse, Automation Systems, the HHV line, and RigiMill foundations to the electrical assembly, people work very hard on the same mission: to manufacture and deliver the next customized machine out of the factory in Kalmar.

After the most recent factory expansion, walking around the facility takes some time, but it's a great way to meet your daily step target.

In the pre-assembly, the Modig team is mounting the first components for the HHV's rotary tables and the rotary chucks. The accuracy of the work is impressive because just a tiny error at this first stage could be devastating. Excellence seems to be the Modig way of working because there is no room for compromising on quality working with the tight tolerances of each complex solution.

My curiosity takes me to the HHV part of the factory because here, the workers work in teams to add detail by detail to what will soon be a new HHV machining center ready to boost a customer's productivity. I pass by machine after machine entering different production phases. While some machines are just shells, other devices are soon ready for test machining.

Walking further to the RigiMill foundation, I see how the Modig team works hand in hand to complete the construction of the vertical machining center, Rigimill. Every effort adds value and is an essential part of the puzzle of building the next version of the machining center, Modig says is the beast of efficiency.

For the untrained eye, it seems to be a mission impossible. But the seamless teamwork between constructors, machine builders, electricians, and other involved in building the machine makes it look easy. In the same way, the Swedish national team in soccer made a freekick look easy when they shocked the world and won the bronze medal in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Please take a look at the freekick to understand.

As my tour ends, the clock bells for Swedish Fika and the factory floor suddenly look like a beach during winter. After about 15 minutes, when the break ends, the Modig team continues to do what they do best— manufacturing the high-performance machining centers and turnkey solutions that have shaped the company's reputation worldwide.

Before leaving the factory, a large gray sign catches my eye that reads:
"We are not a Team because we work together. WE ARE a team because we respect, trust, and care for each other"

This is a catchphrase that summarizes my observations from the production at the machine tool manufacturer Modig very well because without a close-knit group making machines like this wouldn't work.
